DVD-Video buttons are always rectangular. However, you can choose which
pixels within the rectangle are different between the “normal” and
“highlighted” states of the button.

And of course, buttons can overlap. Your DVD player doesn’t care,
because it has to be told which buttons to go to when you press the
up/down/left/right controls on your remote.

In the extreme case, you could have all of your buttons filling the
full area of the screen with 100% overlap, and then choose essentially
random regions to highlight for each button.
