DVD-Video allows for up to 36 buttons and up to 3 button groups. However, it appears the button groups are used for 2 conflicting purposes: with 4:3 video, it lets buttons in different groups use different colour tables; but with 16:9 video, the groups have to be used to specify different button layouts for use on a) widescreen sets, b) narrowscreen sets with pan-and-scan, and c) narrowscreen sets with letterboxing of the video footage.
