Also can someone confirm that for buttons only, that the aspect ratio of the
inbound MPEG is enough to set the aspect ratio for the final MPEG (with
buttons stream)? I recall seeing a note that aspect ratio can be set using
textsub, but there seems to be no way to set aspect ration with spu for
buttons, but maybe that's ok.

I'm mainly asking because today I watched a DVD I created containing 16:9
menus on a 4:3 TV (set to letterbox mode on the DVD player) and I found my
buttons were stretched vertically as if some flag was being ignored.  The
DVD player is a bit old, so maybe it's that. I created the original MPEG as
a 16:9 video (confirmed aspect using MediaInfo on windows) & used the above
XML (and also using the VIDEO_FORMAT env var) but got the same outcome on
that DVD player. However it is fine on VLC player & on another more recent
model DVD player & TV. Should I assume it's a bad DVD player or is there
something I can do in the XML?
