I've now released version 2.3.4 of python-gphoto2. The "binary wheels" 
for MacOS and Linux include libgphoto2 v2.5.30 and, for the first time, 
its localisation files so you can get non-English error messages:

$ LANGUAGE=pl python3 examples/list-files.py
WARNING: gphoto2: (gp_context_error) Nie udało się wykryć żadnego aparatu
