Adding support for an old camera: Where to start?

Hello,

I'm looking to add support for my old Canon Powershot A3300 IS. This model
doesn't appear in the list of supported cameras[1].

I know my way around C, but I've never really manipulated drivers, USBs and
other subsystems. Looking around the code, libgphoto2 is huge and I'm not
sure where to start. Is there a documentation/guide for people like me to
start adding support for their old Canons?

Also, I've been looking around the issues tracker on github[2] and didn't
see any mention of my model. How can I check if work has already been
done/started on this model?
