Getting an old Canon A520 to work with Gphoto

It all started with this article

using a Raspberry Pi with native camera and added a Canon Powershot
A520 for better quality.  So I picked up an A520 for $15 on eBay.  Had
to order a clock battery and a tiny (< 2GB) SD card, and more recently
the Canon miniusb cable IFC-400PCU.  Weeks went by.

Nothing I can do makes the Canon show up in dmesg, lsusb, gtkam on my
Pi.  I've got a thread at

 but they don't seem to be Linux people.  I can go into gtkam and pick
that model specifically from the list of cameras, it still doesn't
work.  Meanwhile Gphoto and gtkam are working fine with my 2 Nikons.

The camera is from 2005, somewhere appears a note that it isn't
guaranteed to work with any USB 2.0 compliant device.  I'm trying to
use it plugged directly into a Raspberry Pi 3B, no hub or extension
cable between.  It's possible I might have an old laptop that's
pre-USB 2.0, but not much else.  Has anyone used one of these recently
with Gphoto?  Is it possible some change broke it and nobody noticed?
The fact that it doesn't show up in lsusb seems ominous but I think
I've seen that in 1 or 2 other cases where only a specific driver
would find a device.  I have tried it both in acquisition and playback
modes, figuring it probably does a USB mode switch.
