Nikon D3300 inconsistent behaviour [ all images are black ]

Hi All, I have several Nikon D3300 hundreds. I'm running them on RPis running Raspian Stretch Lite with libgphoto 2.5.18 and gphoto 2.5.17. They've been working perfectly, however I just created a new OS image and reinstalled same versions of libgphoto and gphoto2, and all my images are suddenly black. I've tried reinstalling, and bumping the version to 2.5.19.
