Doing it in C would speed it up because there's much less overhead.
You could maybe shoot a burst of frames quickly, but not 1000 frames,.
Why don't you just shoot a movie clip then separate the frames with
ffmpeg?  Just use your clip as input to ffmpeg with -i (filename),
then set jpeg as the output type.  From experience a large percentage
of frames will need to be tossed but you start with about 30 FPS.  The
frame rate won't exactly synch with the shutter rate usually.
