When ripping fizzles out toward the end of a CD...

Folks,

I'm ripping CDs onto my laptop (Toshiba Satellite 1905-S303) with 
(mostly) a great deal of success. But occasionally, the process grinds 
to a halt before the entire CD is ripped. Rip rates of 1.5x or so slow 
to 0.1x or worse. This holds true on the same CD whether I'm using 
cdda2wav, cdparanoia, or grip (with CDp). This leads me to think it's 
the CD, not the hardware or software, but I'd be pleased if someone 
wants to disabuse me of that notion -- it's hard to appreciate 
Schubert's Symphony No. 2 when you lose the last two movements! ;-)

If anyone's experienced this, is there a workaround?

Version info:
cdda2wav v2.01a27; cdparanoia III release 9.8; Grip v3.1.4; Linux kernel 
2.6.5-7.11.19-default; distro SuSE v9.1; with additional credits to my 
friends, family, and parents.

I may have missed something in that catalog, so have mercy...
