A little progress in the saga: after changing the settings to cancel the 'Auto-play' on disc insert, grip now allows me to edit the track list (with play stopped) without starting to play each track as I move through the list. I'll have to dig around in the source and find where that option is referenced and see if I can figure out what's going on. At least I'm making a little progress! Thanks for the suggestion about Auto-play, even though it was intended as a possible solution to the other problem...
