grip does rip and encode but does not play the music

On my box I have two CD-ROM devices, one of them with an audio cable to
the soundcard (CMI8738 on the motherboard), the other one without.
Normally I use the second one for listening to my CDs. In Windows I use
wmplayer, in linux I use xmcd, one of the few cdplayers which works well
in CDDA playback. Recently I discovered grip which fits very well my
taste and needs, if only I could convince it to do CDDA playback ! Using
it I can only hear the music from the first CDROM device (the one with
the cable). Although not clearly stated in the doc, I am quite sure
(from browsing the sources) that grip can do, and normally does, CDDA
playback. Did anybody have this problem ? I looked into the mailing list
archive, there are lots of people who could not make it rip from the
beginning, but apparently nobody complained about the playback...
Thank you for any help,
    Andrei
