grip re-reading cd alternating contents with "no disc"

Hi,

I've googled, read the FAQ, and searched the forum, but haven't found help.

I have Redhat 9 - up2date - with grip-3.0.4-5 and lame-3.93.1-fr2 under  
Gnome, I believe.

The very first time I opened grip, it played the cd, and it tried to rip  
for me, but I had the wrong file extension, and the stuff was deleted.  I  
mistakingly gave the mp3 extension when I should have had .wav.  (Beginner  
mistake.)

I think I have it correctly configured now, but grip is alternating  
between reading the cd (and showing the tracks) and complaining of "no  
disk" (with a blank track list).

Every time grip tries to actually read the CD, it says "no disc", and  
re-reads the directory, showing the correct track information.  It does  
this every second.  If I turn off "poll disc drive for new disc", then it  
does it only once when I click play.

I can play the CD by using the cd player with no problem.

cdparanoia shows the cd tracks just fine.

How can I find out what's wrong?  Why does the read attempt fail when play  
(or rip) is clicked?

(I want to get free of windoze.)
