Don't worry. Have a home brew. (Sorry, that's just an amusing line
from a beer brewing book I have that makes a good calming mantra. :)

Yes, that would be. I've just done this and not had any crash. The
encode file format I used was /tmp/mp3/%A/%d/%a-%n.%x.

Is there any output you get if you run grip from a terminal? When
does grip crash, during ripping or encoding? Perhaps you could post
your encoder command line.

I am running grip 3.3.1, I suppose it's possible that this is a bug
which has been fixed, but it's probably worth checking some other
settings before updating to find out.

I'm not quite sure I'm following you on this. What would you set as
the encoder command line to do what you want and what is it that
you're concerned might confuse lame or be overwritten.

I'm using VBR on my mp3's these days and the encoder command line I
have is -V 1 --vbr-new %w %m. I am using lame 3.96.1, from the livna
repo, on FC4.

This isn't actually Grip's default. It's the default on Fedora. They
don't ship any mp3 tools, so grip comes patched to create ogg's.
