Formatted the hard drive? Eeeek. This ain't Windows. :)

Well, the FC grip package doesn't use the same settings at the
packages available from the grip sourceforge site (due to FC's policy
of not shipping patent encumbered software). So it's important to
find out what settings you're using before knowing what the problem
is.

If you want to make backups of your CD's, you may want to consider
using a lossless compression program, like FLAC. Both MP3 and Ogg are
lossy, so when you decode them and put them back on a CD, you'll have
lost some of the details in the music. It may or may not be
noticeable, but it's something to be aware of. FLAC won't lose any of
the details, though it also won't compress nearly as much as MP3 or
Ogg will.

What do you mean by not working? Are no files created? Are there
files created with the wrong extension? Are files of 0 or 128kb
created? It's hard to tell you what needs fixed without knowing
what's wrong. (Patient: "Doctor, it hurts?" Doctor: "What's it?")

I'd suggest that we first verify your lame install is working
properly. How did you install that? I'm using lame 3.96.1 from the
Livna rpm repo for FC4.

If you rip something to a wav, try encoding it from the command line.
Go to the directory with the wav and run this:

    lame -b 192 file.wav file.mp3

You should end up with a usable mp3. If you don't, then post the full
output of that command.

If that all works, then check out your lame settings in grip. If you
can't make it work, post your ~/.grip file.
