Re: new to linux and grip...just a couple easy questions...

Welcome to the Linux world. I had the same reaction several years ago when I
switched full time to Linux. There are still some rough edges with Linux. A
few things that are frustrating. Now days when I sit down at a windoze box
there are hundreds of things I find rough and primitive about windoze. So a
good bit of it is perspective. I feel like I'm playing wiht a tonka toy
rather than a computer when I sit down at a windoze box today :)

Under config then encode tabs these settings have been working pretty good
for me.
Encoder         /usr/local/bin/lame
Encoder command line   -h -b %b %w %m
Encode file extension    mp3
Encode file format    ~/nusnd/%A/%d/%a-%n.mp3

I have a dir in my home dir called nusnd that I use as a sorting dir for
freshly ripped mp3s. Oggs give you better sound quality and less loss but
many windoze users don't know what to do with an ogg file so I stay with
mp3s for now. One wish I have is for Grip to allow you to rip both at the
same time. I'd love to be ripping oggs for personal use and mp3s for files I
want to share with windoze users.

Lame is installed by default with most distros. If it isn't installed it's
easy and well worth installing. Your path to lame may be different. From a
command line just do
which lame
If you have lame installed you'll see the path to your lame command.
I don't include alot of junk in my file name that other people like, so you
may want to man lame and add or subtract command line switches. The man
pages are often rather unintuitive if not downright useless but lame's man
page is semi useful. If you google lame command switches you'll get lots of
good tips as well.

I do suggest installing KDE even if you wind up loving Gnome. There are many
KDE apps you'll want to use. K3b for example crushes any other LInux Burner
software. I personally feel any desktop that doesn't have both KDE and Gnome
installed is only half a desktop. You can freely use KDE apps in Gnome and
Gnome apps in KDE and there are plenty from both which are far superior to
anything offered by the other. Grip for example is my favorite ripper though
i use KAudioCreater every once in a while.  Which desktop manager to use is
a matter of personal choice. I like KDE myself, others like Gnome and others
like lighter desktop managers without all the features and bloat. Try three
or four desktop managers, see which fits you the best. Linux is all about
freedom and power. It's about a machine that is molded to you not the one
size fits all that windoze is.

There are several good forums to browse and ask questions and most Linux
users are happy to answer questions so don't be afraid to ask folks
questions even if they sound noobish. We all started as new Linux users at
one time or another. There are aspects of Linux that seem strange when
coming from the windoze world. Once you get the ideas behind them then they
make sense, if you don't ask questions it might take awhile to get the logic
behind the madness :)
