I noticed this program in the nomadjukebox script and checked for its 
presence. It still exists, so I assume it must still be in use in SuSE.

I've tried that, and it makes no difference. I've added a "touch /tmp/foo" 
to the script as well to verify that it isn't being called (and it isn't). 
There's no reason for it to be called, I guess, since SuSE doesn't install 
hotplug by default. It also doesn't have a package for it in the 10.0 
distribution.

9.3 has hotplug packages, but they're set up in the package manager to 
exclude udev, which makes me worry about installing them next to one 
another. Besides, hotplug is just a way to automate what I should be able to 
do manually, right? I think (with very limited knowledge of hotplug and 
udev) that udev can run scripts like hotplug can.

I guess the question is, what permission problems should I be looking at? It 
can't be the permissions on the device (/dev/usb*) itself, since manually 
editing those doesn't solve the problem. I've even tried to use resmgr to 
"add" the device manually, after it has been detected. Nothing seems to give 
my user permission.
