5.1 sound help

I am trying to get 5.1 sound thru an optical connection.  If I play the mkv
with nero showtime the sound comes out but no vid.  If I play with vlc and
change to spdif I get garbage.  I could buy three stereo pin to rca and
three rca cables but I really don't want to because it might not work
either.  Is there a codec for like power dvd or showtime?
