Stand Alone Media Players

you state that there is no stand alone hardware player units capable of 
playing .mkv products.

Whilst this may be true for disc type players, surely you are aware of 
Western Digital's WDTV, and other Media Players from Popcorn Hour, which 
utilise hard drives for digital playback?

They both support .mkv playback. I'm sure there are others...
