Oh, many devices have multiple mixers, i.e several recording our
output lines, etc. 

The user application should be able to simply set the input or output
level and let this module reporting best capabilities for it doing the work.

If we dont have a playback device at the end, but i.e. an encoder,
we perhaps want to do volume normalization, etc. Normally the encoder
would say it cannot do volume control, so we put a amplifier in front
of it. 

Or think of effect modules, which can be configured in many ways.
This all could be done w/ properties.
