Alas, yes, we could all really use it. In the meantime there are other free codecs. Like the ffmpeg codec, or even mng. If you want to work on something, rewriting fiasco or porting on2's vp32 codec to ogg would be good interm solutions. Although, for what I understand of indymedia's goals, I'd just use mpeg-1 video for clips. It's at least open and well implemented, if not free.
