In the principals of unity it states that we're suppost to use free software whenever possible. Our IMC is dedicated to being totally free, for instance, all image formats on the newswire are converted to jpeg, all audio is converted to ogg vorbis, etc. Other IMCs choose to implement Real as a standard because they find themselves unable to do anything else. The W3D codec looks pretty useable, even though not nearly as optimised as it should. The problem is that whatever we support should be a standard, ie, not something that's likely to change in an incompatable way with the media.
