I have avoided zerotrees because of the patent issues.
Could you tell me the title/authors for that paper?

Instead, I have concentrated on improving MRWD/SLCCA-class of algorithms.
In these, a "significance map" is encoded that tells exactly where the
non-zero coefficients are and then only these coefficients are encoded.
My approach is to encode a close superset of the actual significance map
using predictive coding and leave the remaining zero coefficients to better
modeling of the magnitudes.
