What I meant was that the WHATWG (and now the W3C) recommend baseline
codecs.  Support of Theora, Vorbis, and the Ogg container are
recommendations and, let's be realistic, without baseline codecs
there's no point to the <video> and <audio> elements.

They don't forbid the support of other codecs.

They also provide an ECMAScript API.
