Dear Colleagues, My name is Masami Kikuchi, a new list member, and an independent Japanese developer/producer of live and interactive cultural exchange programmes for distance education and community empowerment, using (primarily ISDN-based) videoconferencing systems, in and from Chiba, Japan. "Detonated" and shockingly inspired into the world of wonder-full and enthusiastic video art using videoconference by Kit Galloway and Sherrie Rabinowitz, co-founders of Electronic Cafe International (http://www.ecafe.com/) in 1994, I have been deeply soaked in the world of live and interactive art/entertainment performances using the ITU-T H.320 and G.722 (audio bandwidth up to 7KHz) standards. (http://www.onlineworkshop.net/archives/) Only yesterday, I visited Polycom Japan's office in Tokyo, and found and was demonstrated the first technologically amalgamated Polycom machine with the so-easy user interface of Polycom and the superb audio Siren 14+ (audio bandwidth up to 14KHz with sub-woofer) of the then-PictureTel: namely Polycom VSX 7000 (ViewStation next model). It must not be only myself who has long awaited creation of such a videoconferencing model with the excellent user interface and the superb audio. Now I should say that "Polycom means Teleculturation". Videoconferencing systems have always been deployed and used by the rich business sectors and governmental institutions....and not frequently and effectively used....as far as I know with my little knowledge. Now with this Polycom VSX 7000, we have entered the Century of live, visual and audio communication for the people. To celebrate this "New Century", I have submitted a proposal of presentation to the Video Conferencing Summit, scheduled to take place on the 23rd and 24th February in New York City (http://sites.securemc.com/folder4073/index.cfm?id=8&fuseaction=browse&pagei d=37). I would accordingly like to ask your favor and collaboration/cooperation as well as support, to realize this presentation whether or not accepted by the organizing committee, to share the quality and wonder of the New Century with the audience. The programme that I plan is "Gagaku" performance (http://www.miduho.gr.jp/gagaku/), the very very old traditional performing art of Japan, lectured and performed by Miduho Gagaku-kai, founded and led by the Gagaku Master Mita Noriaki, my cultural partner. "Gagaku" is a very old traditional orchestra with dancing performance; and my plan is to play orchestra in Tokyo, and dance in New York City, as an online remote collaborative art work. This will enlighten the audience and the world over that "videoconference" is no longer "boring". It will inspire the people of the world that "videoconferencing equipment" is not for "conference", but for "culturation"; not for boredom, but for enthusiasm; not to monopolize, but to share.... And, my short-term goal of this project is for Beijing Olympics in 2008, when people of the world gather together, but even the people who cannot for any reason participate locally, can participate online via the super superb (probably hifi stereo audio will be realzed) Polycom machines around the world. (http://www.onlineworkshop.net/images/gagaku_chart.jpg) Any of you who are intersted in such a project, are very and cordially welcome for collaboration, cooperation and support of our work. Let us share and enjoy the New World of video-communication, at the Video Conferencing Summit 2004 in Februray in NYC. "To hug, we travel."
