RPI - PD & hdmi audio

Hi, dear List !

It's probably a very special usecase, but i wouldn't know where else to ask.

I thought maybe someone else here has encountered the same problem :

For a project i'd like to use the audio signal from the hdmi connection
to a screen attached to a Raspberry PI 4 (or 5 - same problem there).

While this is working alright, when i play a file with mplayer or vlc
(i.e. the audio is played out of the attached screen's speakers) i
hardly can do this with PD.

SYSTEM = RASPIOS 12 (bookworm), fresh installation
PD = 0.53.1 (installed via apt)

Here is what i tried to play audio over hdmi and the results:

PORTAUDIO:

1.) if i select the hdmi device directly the console prints:
"error opening audio: Sample format not supported"

(chenging Samplerate doesn't help)

2.) if i select "ALSA: hdmi", audio works normally !

ALSA:

3.) selecting the hdmi device (hardware), i get a squeeking sound, like
some sort of digital feedback (or a digital offset-signal played through
the speakers).

re-selecting the hdmi device changes the loudness of the audio feedback
in an arbitrary way, but it never stops.

Changing samplerate changes the feedback's pitch, but that's all.

========================================================================

So, right now i somehow stick to method nr. 2 but i was wondering,
what's the matter with 1.) and 3.)

Can anybody share some experience with PD & hdmi audio on a PI ?

(For the record: I tested this on multiple PIs and the result was always
the same. I never used hdmi audio before, so i probably never noticed.
In my situation it would be handy, though)

Thanks for all insights/thoughts/stories

Best

Oliver
