I grepped my dmesg for DMA and my drive does seem to be using it.
Nothing about PIO mode. So no help there. On the upside, though, I
maxxed my buffers and the problem is pretty much 100% resolved... it
even went through the first stage of bonnie++ without a problem. Thanks.
