Equalizer not working for cds

Are the equalizer settings not supposed to work with audio cds? Because when I play audio cds, I hear no difference between having the equalizer on versus off. I hear a drastic difference when I'm playing mp3s, so I know the equalizer is working, and my settings are working. If this is a problem, how do I fix it? Thanks.
