Cannot load mp3 file in xmms

I have installed Red Hat 8.0 on a Dell Inspiron 2500
laptop.
Xmms does not work, although the sound card seems OK
(the system settings/sound card detection/sound card
configuration/test utility plays the chords fine).
When I try to open a mp3 file with xmms, xmms starts,
but the file is not loaded and a file brower window
opens to select at file. I am not able to get xmms to
load the file or add it to the playlist. If I click
play the file browser window opens.

for example

[root@localhost music]# xmms blink_182_AdamsSong.mp3 &


starts xmms but the file does not load, only the file
browser window opens.

any advice would be much appreciated
