Thanks for the idea; I am the libALSA.so output plugin.  It has adjustable 
buffering, but even setting it as high as 50000 ms has no effect.  I 
didn't bother trying higher values than that, since I still get glitches 
before the 50-second mark when playing songs.

Any ideas what I can look at in terms of sound card / network card 
interactions?  it seems like it's the job of the audio application to 
insulate itself from network problems, not vice versa -- and the network 
is generally of high reliability.
