I can not play MP3 files :(

Hi
I hope some one can help me.
I am new in linux and I belive I need help. I installed a 'fedora core 4'.=
=20
I
slowly downloaded what seems to me a lot of packages and finally
installed the xmms program. I go to the console and write 'xmms' and
there it is. BUT I try to add a 'mp3' file to the list to play that but
I can not. It seems to me there is no way to add that file to the list.
I know nothig about this program but it seems to me the program did not kno=
w that file format.
I installed a package xmms-mp3 but is not working any way.
Can someone help me plese ?
