This is all due to a Fedora-specific change to Xmms.  Since the mp3
codec has more than a few patents encumbering it, Fedora doesn't ship
with mp3 support enabled.  You've got the xmms-mp3 package which is
good.  All you should have to do now is disable the placeholder mpd
plugin that Fedora ships and enable the proper plugin that the
xmms-mp3 package installed.

To do this, open the xmms preferences (ctrl-p or right click and
choose preferences).  On the Audio I/O Plugins tab in the Input
plugins sections, find the MPEG Layer 1/2/3 Placeholder Plugin
[librh_mp3.so].  Select it and then toggle the Enabled checkbox.

Also, ensure that the MPEG Layer 1/2/3 Player 1.2.10 [libmpg123.so]
plugin is enabled.  Then you should be able to play mp3's.

Xmms hasn't seen any updates in years though and it still uses the
ancient gtk+ v1 toolkit.  You might want to poke around with some
other players after you're more comfortable with Fedora.

Also, note that Fedora Core 4 is no longer receiving any updates, not
for bugfixes nor for security issues.
