To reproduce to error:

Type:

Color me American.

into a writer document.

Now make sure your language settings are set to UK English:
Tools - options - language settings - laguages
set all to UK English (default)
and just to be sure, set the language of the document to UK English too:
Tools - Language - for all text - english UK.

Now type some American words (see
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_and_British_English_spelling_differences) 

like:

Color
Mom

etc.

Hit f7 and watch as they all slip past undetected!
