Because we have 64-bit processors out there, and 64-bit OSes (examples
being Fedora Core, SuSE Pro, etc...), and one of the major lacking
userspace apps out there is OpenOffice.org, where you've got to install
it in 32-bit mode

Work has already been underway iirc, to get x86_64 going (read archives
of this list for more)
