I'm not sure if this helps, but it's a working example of XForms inside ODT. I've tested it with 1.9.104 and it works fine there. If you have any questions on that feel free to contact me directly.

Could someone post, or point to, some working examples of Xforms, both complex and simple ?

I would really like an example that read and updated data on an eXist xml database.

I am having difficulty in working out how to start connecting the form to the xml data.
