Hello Dave,

You can't delete the styles that come with OpenOffice.org (like Heading 
styles). You can only delete custom styles (the ones you create). They 
don't have to be derived styles at all btw.

You have have the Styles and Formatting window only display your custom 
styles. So you don't have to see the ones that come with OOo. At the 
bottom of the Styles and Formatting window you'll see a drop-down menu. 
Choose Custom Styles to only see the styles you made. Choose Applied 
Styles to only see the styles currently in use in your document.
