using functions inside functions

=IF(LEN(SUM(C35:C40))>1,LEFT(C56,1)+RIGHT(C56,1))

Im suming a set of numbers into a cell.
If the number is over 1 digit - and it always is, I want
to take the left and right digit and add them together.
This works if I do it in two steps but I dont want to
use up column space.
