Check spelling on toolbar

Hi
On the Tex document I have on the standard toolbar a spell check (ABC) and auto check buttons, both of which do not correct deliberate mistakes although when activated a window pops up to tell me the checking is complete. Please tell me how to get both of them working as they should. Many thanks. Patrick Eyre--
