I don't see any problems to use <http://www.google.de/search?q=apache+apxs>
and to check if you require some devel libraries, or where apxs is located.

As stated a few times I use "mutt". The problems of your gmail mails are
problems of mutt. The mail headers of the sending MUA(script) are probably
broken. You should complain to the vendor of the MUA software you use.
