I agree that dropping in and out of {literal} is a pain, although I also
agree with others that {literal} should do what it says, so I'd probably
agree with {literal backticks=1} or similar, but not modifying the default
{literal} behaviour.

For one, I'd expect this to work as it does right now (taken from the Smarty
docs):
    {literal}
    SYNTAX EXAMPLES:
    {func var="test `$foo.bar` test"} <-- sees $foo.bar
    {/literal}

I'd be interested in your views on my suggested {script}{/script} block
handling, in the "Intelligent JavaScript handling" thread, as I think this
would do what you need?
