I agree with you.

    When did gnu started deprecating output to stdout?

GNU != Ubuntu.  We have no control over what Ubuntu does with our
original releases; it's free software after all :).  The last official
release of a2ps was in 2007, so clearly the behavior of GNU a2ps has not
changed.

So, please make your suggestion to Ubuntu.  (BTW, please also consider using
a completely free distro, http://www.gnu.org/distros/free-distros.html.)
