It does occur to me that it 'would be nice' to rename the lib/cidfmap
to something like lib/cidfmap.original. What do you think of this
(I really don't like modifying the distributed files in place, but
at least keep a backup -- as I would if I were to do it manually).

Yes, but see suggestion above about *NOT* modifying the distributed
cidfmap without at lease making a backup.

I *DO* think that this is OK to put into HEAD.

Upon further consideration, maybe it would be reasonable to put the
patches into 8.3x (HEAD) and then put into GS_8_1X once they are
'proved'. This will apply the effort to HEAD, and prevent redundant
commits along the way to GS_8_1X (while we make sure that it is OK).
