database connectivity

Hai folks, 

I am a computer science and engineering graduate working in a small organization helping people in using computers. I would like to do some projects i have done a project on socket programming nad now i want to work on database connectivity using C can anybody help me in doing this i literally dont have idea how to connect a database from C. I have knowldge of RDBMS i mean to say all databases and i am extensively doing research in C so if u gimme the procedure i can get on my own can anybosy help me.
