RE: Pair Programming

Further thinking on pairing

Nearly each of our development teams which are all 5 to 15 people in size
has 1 or 2 "expert programmers" - they are the persons that other developers
turn to if they have a programming/design problem.

These people are interrupted regularly and I'd guess they spend a quarter to
half of their time helping the other programmers to write better code
(mentor/coach/...).

How does this fit with the idea of XP teams?  I think there will always be
these "superprogrammer" types around and I don't see how in a pair
programming environment we make the best use of these people.

I'd say their productivity could be something like 4 times as high as the
average of the other programmers.

Imagine I'd promote XP teams, should I arrange the teams around them?  What
position would they take?

As to the question how many ours one can write production code, ... my guess
is between 4 and 12.  I've seen some of these expert programmers working 14
hours and still being productive.  They are exceptions but they exist (at a
ratio of about 5 in a hundred persons).  At the other end, some people don't
get 4 hours of real production code productivity ...
