The difference is that meetings generally include all the team - or at 
least a larger number than two. Individuals can pair with whoever is
available and most people can't pair all day anyway... both because 
it's a very intense activity and because they have other solo tasks
to perform. At a recent user group meeting, we went around the table
and found that about half the companies doing pairing had some sort
of flex schedule and that they managed to pair anyway. Some of these
were small teams with a common time overlap of only 5 or 6 hours.

There's a sort of circularity here. Some people are trying to do XP
with distributed teams, with mixed success. The tools for collaboration
are not yet as good as they would need to be for this to work as well
as face to face collaboration. But this is also one of the reasons why
teleworking is less widespread in general than many had believed it would
be by this time. If teleworking does become much more common, I think
it will be because better collaboration software is being developed.
When that happens, XP will undoubtedly transform, just as other kinds
of group work will transform. We need to trust that we'll be able to
deal with the future in this as in many other areas.
