XP vs. "Traditional"

Given that XP and other Agile methodologies have sweet spots in which 
they can best be applied, does anybody know of work done that 
attempts to quantify the advantages of XP over heavier methodologies 
in an apples-to-apples comparion?.  

While one may know intuitively that the XP approach will 
yield "better" results, convincing others can be quite another 
story.  Having hard data to share can sometimes be helpful in this 
regard.  

Not sure if this is the right place for this post, but thought that I 
try here first.
