Not only is it a difficult transition, many times it is not really what one could choose to do.  I was "well-groomed" by my boss at the time.  What's funny is I look back on all of the things he made me do and not do.  I was furious with him at the time, but now I see that he was giving me on the job training.

And since you are going to ask, the one that I remember most was after he made me the "tech-lead", he would only let me work on the least interesting and least challenging stuff.
