Force is not a necessary condition for work. Or pay.Just responsibility and accountability. That is, if one wants to work and get paid more than once.

Yes, if having to work for money is coercion.

The value of standup is coercion and shame?

To me personally the value of the standups is that it forces participants to think in terms of work done. This is good for developer discipline because we know we will have to tell the team that we accomplished something. As a result we actually do something useful. Without stand ups it's common to have 'I'm working on it' for days. I've certainly done it.

Another thing it promotes collaboration. I've stopped counting times when someone brings up a blocker and other member of the team offer help and sync up after the standup. In theory they should be doing it in real time offline, but it works so I'll take it.

Status meetings can be done via tools.
I don’t need to hear “i worked on 4534 after finishing 4640 yesterday. Today I’ll be working on 4534 some more. No blockers”
I certainly don’t want to talk about all the cards on the wall.
I want to plan the day’s attack and hear what we can do to be most useful to each other and the goal of the project. I don’t want a ticket status report.  Like everyone else at the meeting, I’ll be trying to look interested while waiting my turn to speak, then trying to look interested until I can go back to work.
How much do I really care about the 80% status on ticket 7763? I don’t know what any of these numbers mean anyway. And if I’m not going to work on it today why is it my problem?
Unloading a lot of baggage, I know, but status meetings as I see them at so many corporations are precisely that.
“Cindy?”“Worked on 3345 yesterday. Working on it still. No blockers.”“What percent done?”“Maybe 75.”“Okay, Bob?”“I worked on 4356 yesterday. I’ll probably finish it today. No blockers”“Okay, Ish?”“Still working on 7721. No blockers. Maybe 80% done.” “Okay, Priti?”
Yaaaaaaaawn.
