Cats and dogs aside, I think I’ve learned a real intolerance for meetings that don’t provide value to the participants. A lot of meetings are held because that’s the ceremony that’s held. Everyone in the room knows it’s a waste of time but they have to be there. In some cases, it’s how you kowtow to a boss who called the meeting. You go to show respect. Sometimes it’s because “that’s what agile requires” (which doesn’t seem to ring true). Sometimes it’s tradition. People accept many hours of waste in their day, lost days per week, lost weeks per month, doing things that are “just part of the job” and “just how things are around here.” When there are better ways — for instance using small steps (and/or TDD) rather than writing all the code ASAP and then spending hours in compiler warnings/errors, then more hours in debugging, then more fixing the rest of the errors later — in these cases, using a better way is far more important than maintaining a waste of time in the name of “tradition,” “respect,” or “agile.” If it’s only worth 15 minutes, and we know we don’t get that much out of it, then we need to do something that is worthy of 45 minutes (and try to get it done in less).
