I'm sorry if my original comments gave the impression that cost and value
were not significant considerations. Certainly there are expensive
publications, membership fees and conferences.
However, I think we'd all agree that the PragPub magazine and the PragProg
podcasts are well within anyone's budget. Although there aren't necessarily
physical meetings everywhere in the world, more than a few of the local
meetings that do occur in many cities are free and frequent. Personally I'm
somewhat overwhelmed by the number of Ruby, Rails, Cocoa and iOS
educational resources available over the Internet and thus devoid of travel
costs. iTunes U, for example, offers courses whose tuition probably run up
into the thousands of dollars free for the asking.
None of the above should be taken to mean that a wise employer shouldn't
invest in employee education nor provide the proper tools. OTOH if an
employer fails to do those things that would seem to me a good indication
that a search for another position would be in order.
