Well it all rather depends on the conference doesn't it.  I have attended
the ACCU conference* which is in Oxford.  A cheap flight from Europe is
probably no more than 50 Eur.  A B&B (bed and breakfast) maybe anywhere
between 40 and 70 Eur a night - you may need 4 nights.  Intra-UK travel 
to and from Oxford maybe 40 Eur.

If you want something more aimed at Java you have Devoxx in Antwerp.
Again it is a conference which is reasonably priced.  I don't know
Belgian prices for accomodation etc. but the conference itself isn't
expensive as these things go.

Neither of these should break the bank if you are sensible.  Yes they
may be a large chunk of money if you are not used to paying out that
much.  But it is money well spent IMO.  You don't have to pick one
of the more expensive conferences in the USA in order to improve your
knowledge.

* Note: I'm a member of ACCU.  Cost £35/year.  Includes two magazines - one 
of which is very good.
